Appalachian Trail Day 105: Unionville Wetlands & the Stairway to Heaven (2026)

Title: A Day of Adventure and Challenges on the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail, a majestic pathway stretching across the United States, is more than just a hiking trail; it's a journey of discovery and resilience. In this article, I, Gerjan 'Hungry' Hertgers, a 28-year-old Dutchman, share my experiences on Day 105 of my thru-hike with my dad in 2026. We embarked on this adventure with a sense of excitement and anticipation, eager to explore the trail's wonders.

A Beautiful Yet Challenging Day

After a refreshing night's sleep, we set out to conquer the day. The wetlands we passed through were breathtaking, with their serene beauty and tranquil atmosphere. However, the iconic board walk, while visually appealing, was marred by the relentless mosquito swarms. The constant buzzing and biting made it difficult to enjoy the surroundings, and we had to find creative ways to minimize their impact, like seeking temporary refuge in the creamery for a much-needed morale boost.

The Stairway to Heaven

Our next challenge was the infamous 'Stairway to Heaven'. While it was a demanding ascent, it was not insurmountable. We persevered, driven by the desire to reach the shelter spot and set up our tents for the night. Despite the discomfort of sleeping in the open, we were grateful for the opportunity to rest, reflecting on the day's challenges and the resilience it took to overcome them.

Personal Reflection

This day on the Appalachian Trail was a testament to the trail's ability to surprise and challenge us. The beauty of the wetlands and the iconic board walk were overshadowed by the relentless mosquitoes, and the 'Stairway to Heaven' was a test of our physical and mental fortitude. However, these challenges are what make the journey so rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience them.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey, I am eager to see what other surprises and challenges the Appalachian Trail has in store for us. The trail's ability to surprise and challenge us is what makes it so captivating, and I am excited to see what the future holds. Stay tuned for more updates on our thru-hike adventure, where we will continue to explore the beauty and resilience of the Appalachian Trail.
