Another 44 Santander branches are closing, leaving 291 jobs hanging in the balance. It's a stark reminder of the seismic shift happening in the banking world as more and more customers embrace online banking. But here's where it gets controversial: while Santander claims this move reflects changing customer preferences, ministers argue it disproportionately affects the elderly and vulnerable who rely on physical branches for their banking needs.
This latest round of closures by the Spanish-owned bank follows last year's announcement to shut down 95 branches, impacting 750 jobs. Santander isn't alone in this trend; Lloyds Bank is also set to close over 100 branches by March. The reason? A staggering 96% of Santander's transactions now happen digitally, according to the bank. And this is the part most people miss: Santander is trying to bridge the gap by offering alternative services like 'Santander Locals' in community centers and libraries, where customers can get assistance one day a week. They're also investing in a diverse branch network, including full-service branches, counter-free branches, and even 'work cafes.'
But the concern remains: are these alternatives enough to prevent the creation of 'banking deserts'? Parts of Yorkshire, for instance, are already facing a 10-mile trek to the nearest bank. The solution, in theory, lies in 'banking hubs' funded by major banks and run by Post Office managers. However, their rollout has been slow, leaving many communities in limbo.
Is the decline of physical bank branches an inevitable consequence of technological progress, or are we abandoning those who rely on traditional banking methods? The debate rages on, and Santander's latest closures are sure to fuel the fire.
