Space industry firm Terram Astra has announced its ambitious plans to establish a high-tech communications hub on the outskirts of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, and another potential site in South Australia. With a focus on creating a fibre-optic-speed satellite communication network, the company aims to provide an alternative to subsea cable communications. This move is particularly significant in light of potential global conflicts that could disrupt communication lines.
Terram Astra's CEO, Sean Thomas, emphasizes the importance of a ground-based, inland communication network as a redundancy measure. He highlights the potential risks associated with communication cables being cut or becoming inoperable during heightened global conflicts. By establishing a robust satellite communication network, Australia and its allies can enhance their deterrence and defense capabilities.
The company is in discussions with the Northern Territory government and has also reached out to the US-Australian base Pine Gap to explore potential defense collaborations. Terram Astra's representatives express their desire to be a 'good neighbour' to Pine Gap, aiming to initiate collaboration and discussion. They believe their advanced technologies could significantly benefit the Australian government.
Founded by Scott Wallis, Terram Astra has a strong foundation in the space industry. Wallis previously founded Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA), which facilitated three NASA rocket launches from Arnhem Land in 2022. Mr. Thomas, with his experience in developing plans for a major US fuel tank depot in Darwin Harbour, brings valuable expertise to the company.
Terram Astra aims to raise $US10 million in seed funding to kickstart the project. The company's representatives have confirmed that they are pursuing a piece of Crown land on the Brewer Estate, south of Alice Springs, with the goal of becoming operational by late 2026. They plan to expand their high-level technologies to other locations after establishing a strong presence in Alice Springs.
Despite the company's promising prospects, it is worth noting that Terram Astra's founder, Scott Wallis, had a previous acrimonious departure from ELA, which was involved in sub-orbital NASA rocket launches from Arnhem Land. The company's future success will depend on effective collaboration and addressing any potential challenges, especially regarding land tenure and community relations.
