UK Weather Update: Storm Chandra's Impact and the Week Ahead (2026)

Brace yourself for a week of wet and windy weather, but take heart, it's not as severe as we've seen recently!

The Met Office brings us the latest forecast, and while it's not all sunshine and rainbows, there are some brighter moments to look forward to.

The Storm's Legacy

Storm Chandra has now merged with a larger low-pressure system, but its impact lingers. Fog and ice will gradually clear today, revealing some sunny spells and drier conditions for many.

However, more low-pressure systems are on their way, tracking across the Atlantic. These systems will slow down as they encounter a high-pressure block in eastern Europe, bringing additional rain, especially in the southwest, and hill snow in parts of northeast Scotland.

Tonight's Outlook

Low cloud and fog will return to many central and eastern areas tonight, accompanied by patchy rain and hill snow in northeast Scotland. It'll be breezy in the southwest with scattered showers, while clearer skies elsewhere might bring a touch of frost.

Wednesday's Wake-Up Call

A different morning awaits many on Wednesday, with dense fog in northeast England and icy patches across the country. Rain will be confined to the far northeast, with a few showers in the far west and southwest. Otherwise, expect a brighter morning with sunny intervals.

Yellow Alert for Thursday

Matthew Lehnert, the Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, warns of a Yellow Warning for rain on Thursday. He explains, "Showers in southwest England will give way to a more consistent rain pattern as the next system reaches Cornwall by lunchtime. The Yellow Warning is in effect from noon on Thursday until Friday morning, with heavier rain expected across southwest England as the wet conditions move northeast."

Lehnert adds, "The rain will be heavy at times and only last a few hours in each location. We're expecting 10-15 mm of rain widely, but some areas, especially near the south coast, could see an additional 20-25 mm. With the ground already saturated from Storm Chandra, we urge everyone to stay informed and follow emergency service and local authority guidance."

Unsettled Weekend Ahead

Friday will bring more rain and blustery showers to the west and southwest, with colder temperatures further north and slightly milder air in the south. Scotland may experience additional hill snow.

Northern Ireland has a Yellow warning for rain in place from midnight until Friday evening. The wettest conditions are expected over Antrim and Down, with many areas potentially receiving 10-25 mm of rainfall, and up to 40-60 mm over some hills. Strong southeasterly winds will accompany the rain.

Stay informed and keep an eye on the latest forecasts via the Met Office's website, YouTube channel, X, Facebook, and mobile app.

And this is the part most people miss... While we prepare for the wet and windy week ahead, it's important to remember that weather patterns can be unpredictable. So, stay tuned, and let's navigate this together!
